21-year-old U.S. track star Sha’Carri Richardson recently qualified to run the women’s individual 100m event in the Tokyo Summer Olympics. It was subsequently revealed that she had tested positive for use of marijuana, a banned substance. This led to her disqualification from participation in any Olympic events this summer. Then, Sha’Carri did something that stunned many and also drew praise from supporters around the world: she very publicly admitted to using marijuana when distraught after learning from a reporter about the death of her biological mother, shortly before the qualifiers. In exploring this story, we will consider the concept of truth and its foundational role in establishing the inherent worth and dignity of every person, with a focus on how we achieve personal integrity through truth.
