Our Minister and Staff
Rev. Michelle Ma was ordained to Unitarian Universalist ministry in 2020 and received her Masters in Divinity from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. She was born and raised in California, moving to Cleveland, OH for a parish internship at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church. Afterward, she spent two years at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, working as a Chaplain Resident and then a Chaplain Fellow specializing in patients with serious mental illness. She is delighted to be in North Carolina now and is enjoying the much more abundant sunshine, not to mention the abundant seafood! Rev. Michelle is passionate about church and ministry and all the wonderful things that can happen when people come together.
OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ADMINISTRATOR: Sarah Sutherland
Sarah Sutherland holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership in Human Services and has worked in the fields of domestic violence, sexual assault, developmental disabilities, substance abuse prevention, and community organizing. She is a grant writer for the Boys and Girls Club of Souhegan Valley in Milford, New Hampshire.
Sarah has been a Unitarian Universalist since 1986. She and her family – daughter, two granddaughters, and two dogs – relocated in 2016 from New Hampshire to a tiny house in Cedar Point, North Carolina.
OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR: Tom Cullison
Tom Cullison was a music major and a trumpet player in college, before becoming an orthopedic surgeon. He and his family were members of several Unitarian Universalist churches and sang in several UU choirs) during Tom’s 40-year U.S. Navy service. Before COVID, Tom loved conducting the UCF choir. During COVID, he is honing his skills finding and sharing recorded music of all genres to bring heart and soul to our Zoom services.
OUR ACCOMPANIST: Meganne Smith
Meganne teaches English from middle school through college levels and has been a piano/music teacher, church pianist, and on-call musician for weddings and other events for about fifteen years. She was also an All-State clarinetist in her youth and played the clarinet in the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) Concert Band while attending there. Another talent she has shared with our congregation is writing poetry. She brings a contemporary ear to finding music for UCF’s services – on Zoom now, in person when possible.
OUR OFFICE ASSISTANT: Jamie DeRose
Jamie graduated from NC State University with a degree in Environmental Technology and Management. After college, she served in the Peace Corps in Peru and then spent time traveling in South and Central America. She is currently working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and working from home during COVID. She has two cats and a dog (her three babies) Jamie brings a multitude of skills to the job of Office Assistant and UCF is thrilled to have her.
