On Thursday, February 22nd, members from UU churches across North Carolina joined UU Justice NC and Every Child NC to gather in Raleigh for a “Leandro Day of Action”. On that day, the State Supreme Court was “rehearing” the case of adopting the Leandro Act which was passed in 2022 to fund public schools to allow all children in NC to have a quality education. An earlier Supreme Court had decided in favor of adopting the Leandro Act and freeing up the Leandro funding.
Activities included a Car Caravan, making a “joyful noise” singing outside the State Supreme Court, and a march to the NC General Assembly building.
Many other organizations attended this protest and many who could not make it to Raleigh contacted their legislators to ask them to pass the funding to ensure our children finally receive the sound, basic education promised to them in our state’s constitution.
